For many women, pregnancy and childbirth should be moments of hope and new beginnings. But across much of Pakistan, these experiences are still filled with fear, risk, and uncertainty.
Every day, too many women give birth without skilled medical support. Some deliver at home. Others walk miles to reach overcrowded clinics. Many don’t have access to clean facilities, trained staff, or emergency care if something goes wrong.
The consequences are devastating and preventable.
The reality behind the statistics
Pakistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in South Asia. According to global health reports, 27 women die every day from childbirth-related complications in the country. Thousands of newborns don’t survive their first days.
These aren’t just numbers. They’re mothers, daughters, and families left behind often due to a lack of basic healthcare access.
Now, the Behbud Maternal & Children Hospital is the next chapter in that story. Building on its legacy of service, Behbud seeks to extend its reach by addressing one of the most pressing needs in Pakistan today: the critical shortage of maternal and child healthcare.
The hospital will offer a range of essential services, from prenatal care and safe childbirth to paediatric care and immunizations, ensuring that the most vulnerable in the community—mothers and children—are given the best chance at a healthy future.
What safe motherhood should really look like
Safe motherhood isn’t just about surviving childbirth — it’s about being treated with dignity, receiving proper care, and having the support needed through every stage of pregnancy and beyond.
It includes:
- Regular antenatal checkups
- Skilled birth attendants or midwives
- Clean, well-equipped delivery facilities
- Postnatal care for mother and baby
- Education on maternal nutrition and newborn health
For many, these essentials are out of reach.
How Behbud is changing the story
At Behbud Maternal & Children Hospital, we are working to change that — one mother, one baby, and one community at a time.
We’re building a 100-bed, non-profit hospital in Rawalpindi to serve women and children who need care the most. With services ranging from antenatal care and safe deliveries to newborn screenings and maternal education, our mission is simple: to save lives and provide every child a healthy start.
We’re also investing in midwife training programs, enabling women from underserved communities to become skilled caregivers in their own neighborhoods, helping others while building futures for themselves.
In the words of our president
“Every mother deserves to be heard, seen, and cared for not just during delivery, but throughout her journey into motherhood.” — Mrs. Abida Saleem Malik, President, Behbud Association of Pakistan
